What is a Demi Pair?

As the name itself implies, a Demi Pair is similar to an Au Pair but they’re only spending half of their time looking after children and the other half is for their studies. If you’re a student who goes to a University, then being a demi-pair could be a good option for you as it does not only help you improve your English skills, it can also accommodate your work and studies.

Who can become a Demi Pair?

You can become a Demi Pair in Australia if you:

  • Have experience and are keen to work with children
  • Have a mature, patient, and loving personality
  • Have intermediate English skills
  • Are interested in living with a local family and immerse yourself in the family’s lifestyle
  • Are able to provide support with childcare 15-25 hrs a week (outside of school hours)
  • Can stay with the family 6+ months
  • Can drive (not mandatory but most families need a driver)

Why should you become a Demi Pair?

There are several advantages to being a Demi Pair. Here are just some of them:

  • Have a home away from home
  • Quality accommodation (i.e. Brighton by the beach) + Board (value = AUD 350/week)
  • Earn pocket money between AUD210-500/week (the amount depends on your experience & qualifications i.e you can drive, study a childcare related course, etc)
  • Have the opportunity to improve your English skills with your host family
  • Have a local reference and add experience for your CV (this is for when you apply for jobs in Australia in the future)
  • Less pressure to look for jobs to cover your living expenses
  • Local contacts through your host family
  • More time to focus on your studies
  • Be mentored by professional host parents (especially when you’re in the same field i.e Medicine, Law, etc)

Young people who want to explore Australia, experience a different lifestyle and professions and challenge themselves are those who benefit the most. Apart from the transferable skills earned during their placement, they are also able to receive quality accommodation and board, be mentored by parents who are professionals in different fields, learn a new lifestyle, and earn pocket money that will be helpful for their studies or future endeavors.

Our Host Families vary from doctors, nurses, lawyers, corporate managers and directors, architects and successful business owners.

For example, we have a family from Templestowe, both parents are doctors. They are seeking a young person to help with school pick-ups and drop-offs and look after their little ones while they’re at work. They want to welcome a Demi Pair with a fun personality in their gorgeous home and who can stay a minimum of six months.

We also have a single mother who is a Nurse from Newcastle who will soon move to Darwin/Katherine. She is looking for a responsible and reliable Demi Pair who can drive & can also stay six months or more with her & her daughter once they move to NT.

Both these families live in some of the best & safest suburbs with amazing views, perfect for someone taking a gap year to explore!

On the other hand, anyone with a heart & willingness to explore the opportunities available for them can join our Demi Pair program!

Meet Nozomi

Nozomi is an international student from Japan. She comes from a family of 5 and has two younger siblings she used to look after. She is accustomed to watching small kids & helping with household work.  She also has a drivers’ license. She is studying to get her Certificate III in Childcare in Melbourne and wanted to learn more about childcare. She believes being a Demi Pair will help her gain additional experience for her future career as an Educator. She was seeking for a nice, friendly and warm family to live with not only to provide support but share her Japanese culture as well.

We were able to place Nozomi to a lovely local family in Melbourne and she occasionally provides Nannying services to other families as well. Nozomi continues to pursue her dream of becoming an educator while exploring Down Under with her newly found friends. She also got plenty of local references to add to her CV!

Meet Angela

Angela has been with her current host family for almost two years now. She is from Spain and is currently finishing up on her Event Management course at Greenwich College in Melbourne. It’s Angela’s love for the outdoors, cooking, and her passion for small kids that makes her a perfect match for her host family. Angela also has a drivers’ license. Angela’s class schedule matches her Demi Pair role perfectly so she is able to manage her studies while enjoying the company of her family away from home.
