English for Academic Purposes (EAP)
The focus of the EAP course is to develop English language proficiency for academic use, which students will require in order to study alongside native speakers in further and higher education.
EAP 1 bridges the gap between General English and Academic English, and is foundational for those wanting to advance their English to an academic level. It teaches students how to develop the necessary skills required to be effective in further education settings, such as note-taking, essay writing and presentation skills. It also provides strategies for undertaking research and handling unfamiliar academic vocabulary.
EAP 2 focuses on developing students’ academic English skills to prepare them for vocational-level studies and tertiary studies. Students are given further practice in academic skills, such as how to analyse the characteristics of written and spoken academic texts, how to develop an awareness of the academic culture, and how to avoid plagiarism. This course also guides students in developing proficiency in sophisticated essay organisation, note-taking, group discussions, reference writing and text paraphrasing. Students learn more effective research skills and develop academic presentation abilities.
